Scientific Guide to Changing Cat Litter
How often you change cat litter directly affects your cat’s health and your home environment. Change it too often and you waste it; change it too little and it becomes unhygienic. This article helps you determine the right timing scientifically.
Daily Cleaning
No matter which type of cat litter you use, it is recommended to remove feces and urine clumps at least 1–2 times a day. Timely cleaning extends the litter’s lifespan and keeps the litter box clean.
Full Replacement Cycle
Tofu cat litter: replace completely about every 2–3 weeks for one-cat households.
Bentonite cat litter: replace completely about every 3–4 weeks for one-cat households.
Pine cat litter: remove the powder from the bottom layer after about 2 weeks, and replace completely once a month.
Mixed cat litter: replace completely about every 2–3 weeks.
Signs It’s Time to Replace Early
- Noticeable odor from the litter box
- The litter has become visibly darker and dirtier
- Clumping performance has clearly declined
- Your cat refuses to use the litter box
Notes for Multi-Cat Households
Multi-cat households need more frequent litter changes. For 2 cats, replace 30% sooner; for 3 or more cats, replace 50% sooner.
Tips
When changing litter, it is recommended to keep a small amount of old litter mixed in with the new litter to help your cat adjust. The litter box itself should also be cleaned and disinfected regularly.
